EXTENSION
ACTIVITIES
Research achievements alone are not adequate to gauge
the success of animal science research system. In fact
different components of transfer of technology system,
when placed and harmonized properly, result in the flow
of technology to end users. Visualizing this key role,
CIRB launched its transfer of technology programme and
activities to demonstrate the latest technical advances
to dairy farmers. Various extension activities were
organized in the adopted villages to initiate self and
community rationalization.

Impact of Breeding Bull in Village Thaska
A bull has paramount importance in breed improvement.
Therefore, on the demand of village Panchayat a superior
bull was stationed at village Thaska from 1989-92. During
this period, more than 200 progenies of this genetically
superior bull were born. Average milk production of
50 female progenies of this CIRB bull was 9.2kg as compared
to 6.3 Kg in case of 50 randomly selected buffaloes
of the village bulls.
Impact of Mineral Supplementation
In a study carried out during the year 1997-98 in village
Durjanpur, 100 animals (70 buffaloes and 30 adult heifers)
of more than 3 years of age showing delayed anestrous
for more than 6 months were randomly selected and given
mineral mixture @ 50 gm / animal / day mixed in the
ration of these animals. It was observed that more than
70 percent lactating buffaloes and adult heifers with
delayed anestrous came into heat and conceived within
a period of 2-4 weeks.
Farmers' trainings
The institute organizes training programmes for farmers.
In view of massive need for human resource development
6 farmers' trainings, of 15 to 21 days duration each,
covering almost all aspects of buffalo production were
organized. Demand received from time to time by various
NGOs / Farmers' groups are met by organizing special
trainings as per their need. At the moment, the Institute
is organizing trainings and camps in villages throughout
the length and breadth of Haryana state in collaboration
with Punjab National Bank Farmers' Training Centre,
Sachha Khera, Jind. Another farmer based project, in
collaboration with IARI, New Delhi, is being implemented
in villages of Rajasthan state.
Field Progeny Testing programme
The Institute is working in six adopted villages under
field progeny testing programme since 1998. Since the
beginning of this programme in village Juglan, the farmers
of adopted villages eagerly adopting the technique of
Artificial Insemination with semen from superior bulls
of CIRB. Registered animals are also provided free health
cover and treatment.
In addition, different extension activities like infertility
camps, campaigns, Kisan Mela, milk competitions, Judging
competition, demonstrations etc are organized in adopted
villages. Institute also organizes buffalo Melas, camps,
calf rallies etc. at the premises and villages in which
large number of farmers participate.
